FA Cup

Everton edge Spurs in nine goal thriller, City, Foxes, Blades also into Quarters

Wednesday evening saw another four FA Cup fifth round, who would join AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United in the Quarter Finals?  Four more sides would do just that this evening, lets see who did just that…
Swansea City 1 Manchester City 3
The Swans had seen off League Two Stevenage in Round Three in Hertfordshire before they thrashed fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest at the Liberty Stadium to set up this rather difficult but exciting tie against one of the best sides in Europe right now in Manchester City.  The visitors had breezed past Championship Birmingham City in round three, but they were given a right old scare by League Two Cheltenham Town in the last round, netting three times in the final ten minutes to come from behind to win that one, and they would certainly be tested here against a very confident Swansea right now who are flying in the Championship.
Man City though are flying themselves as we know so they would certainly start this one as favourites, but could the hosts possibly pull off an upset? The visitors were dominant in the opening exchanges and found a way through just before half time when Kyle Walker played a ball in to try and find Ferran Torres but the striker missed it but in doing so caught out keeper Freddy Woodman who saw the ball carry on past him and into the far corner, a very soft goal to concede for the hosts but one Man City more than deserved.
Swansea to their credit responded well to going behind and certainly saw much more of the ball in the latter part of the first period than they had seen in the first half-hour, but could they continue that into the second period and cause this Man City team real problems in the second period?  Well, within five minutes of the restart this contest was pretty much put to bed, as the hosts were caught cold a minute into the second period as a lovely pass from Rodri found Raheem Sterling in acres of space to go in on goal and slot past Woodman, and then three minutes after that the Premier League leaders made it three as Swansea tried to play out, lost the ball and saw cross to the back post headed back into the six-yard box by Bernando Silva into Gabriel Jesus who turned and fired a lovely close-range effort past Woodman, as clinical as you like, and the visitors were now able to make some changes as they were now cruising.
Swansea themselves made four changes in one go just past the hour mark to give those likely to be involved in their weekend league game a rest, this tie was done so was time to look ahead to what is the hosts focus which is a return to the promised land and the Premier League, and to their credit showed a lot of spirit and did manage to pull a goal back with thirteen minutes remaining as one of those changes, Morgan Whittaker, swivelled and struck a lovely left-footed effort beyond Zack Steffan. City though cruised through and broke a record in the process by being the first top-flight side to net fifteen straight wins, they are on fire right now and will at least fancy a domestic treble this season, and who would bet against them?

Sheffield United 1 Bristol City 0
The Blades have had to battle past two League One sides to get to this stage, with wins at Bristol Rovers and then at home to Plymouth Argyle, whilst Bristol City saw off League One Portsmouth at home before netting a comfortable win at fellow Championship side Millwall to set up what looked on paper a rather intriguing tie. The Blades have been in reasonable form lately, but the visitors will fancy giving the hosts a lot to think about and obviously would have been confident of pulling off a surprise at Bramall Lane, although the Premier League side are using this cup run to take confidence into their relegation battle in the league, so they would be very focused on progressing.
City saw a Tomas Kalas effort well saved by Aaron Ramsdale, whilst The Blades saw full back Max Lowe send an effort against the bar, but the first half ended goalless, but just past the hour mark came the winning moment which saw VAR get involved, as an David McGoldrick effort was deflected onto the bar by Alfie Mawson before a follow up effort from John Lundstram was cleared off the line, but replays suggested McGoldrick’s effort had struck Mawson’s hand before crashing against the bar, preventing it from going into the net, and after the referee had gone over to have a look at the screen, he agreed with the VAR and gave the hosts a penalty and sent off Mawson.  Billy Sharp then stepped up to dispatch the penalty, and it was enough to see The Blades go through to the Last Eight.

Leicester City 1 Brighton & Hove Albion 0
The Foxes have been on the road at very tough Championship opponents so far in this run to the Last 16, and they saw off Stoke City quite comfortably before coming from behind to ease past Brentford in the last round, but they now have a home tie against fellow Premier League outfit Brighton who themselves have been playing well lately. The Seagulls have had a rather less comfortable run to this stage, needing penalties to see off League Two Newport County before squeezing past League One Blackpool to set up this tie at The King Power, so how would they fare against a Leicester side who would harbour hopes of winning this competition?
The first half wasn’t exactly a thriller, no goals and no shots on target in the opening forty-five minutes, and although both sides found the net in the second period, they were both chalked off for offside, and it looked like extra time would be needed.  However, four minutes into stoppage time Leicester netted the winner as a quickly taken corner caught out Brighton and Kelechi Ihenacho was left free at the far post to head down and into the net and send the Foxes into the Quarterfinals!!!

Everton 5 Tottenham Hotspur 4 (aet)
The Toffees have seen off two Championship sides at Goodison Park so far in this run, they needed extra time to see of Rotherham United in Round Three before having a more comfortable win against Sheffield Wednesday in the last round, and they welcome fellow Premier League side Spurs to Goodison looking to heap more pressure on Jose Mourinho and co. Spurs themselves cruised past Marine in Round Three of course before they were tested at Wycombe Wanderers in Round Four before they pulled away from them late on to take their place in the Final Sixteen, but this would be a much tougher test of course. Spurs though had the perfect start when a corner swung in saw Davidson Sanchez rise to glance a header into the far corner inside four minutes, but Everton turned the tie on its head beyond the half-hour mark, firstly levelling when Dom Calvert-Lewin lashed past Hugo Lloris, and then secondly when Richarlison produced a precise finish into the bottom right corner, and Spurs had gone from looking comfortable to being behind in a flash.
And then just before half time Everton were awarded a spot-kick after Calvert-Lewin was clipped by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and skipper Gylfi Sigurdsson sent Lloris the wrong way, and the hosts had three goals in seven first half minutes, crazy!!! Spurs though managed to pull a goal back just before half time after a clever one-two finished with Erik Lamela dinking the ball over Robin Olsen, it had been a brilliant tie thus far with both teams going hell for leather, what would the second half bring? Eleven minutes into the second half Spurs levelled as a corner swung in saw Toby Alderweireld glance a header at goal which Olsen saved well, but Sanchez was on hand to flick the loose the ball home for his second of the night, incredible considering he had only one goal in his whole Spurs career prior to this game, what a cup tie this was!!! Had the game swung Spurs way again?
Prior to that leveller, Harry Kane had come on for the visitors, and the hosts had lost Calvert-Lewin to a hamstring injury, so a double boost for the visitors, and a double blow for the hosts, could Spurs now go on to win this incredible tie? Well, with just over twenty minutes remaining it was The Toffees who regained the lead once again as a lovely ball from Sigurdsson released Richarlison who fired a lovely effort across Lloris and in off the far post, but Spurs came back to level once again thanks to that Son-Heung-min/Kane partnership striking again this season as a wonderful whipped cross to the far post saw Kane stoop to power a diving header into the net at the back post, and it really was hard to tell which way this tie would turn next. Seven minutes into extra time, Everton netted what proved to settle this extraordinary tie, as another wonderful ball from Sigurdsson found Bernard who had timed his run perfectly and he struck a lovely pass into the far corner and sent Carlo Ancelotti’s men into the Quarters of the FA Cup, what a marvellous game of football that was though!!! An all time classic in every sense…

Wow, what a final game of the day that was, still have two more ties to come tomorrow to complete the Fifth Round, as well as the Quarter-Final draw, here are tomorrow’s matches…
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Southampton (5.30pm)
Barnsley v Chelsea (8pm)

Will we get more drama tomorrow? We will find out soon enough…

Keepmeinmind Staying Put for Southwest

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 6:12 pm |
Back to: Top News Updated: February 10, 2021 at 6:13 pm
Keepmeinmind | Robert Yates

Despite the weather-enforced postponement of the GIII Southwest S., Keepmeinmind (Laoban) will remain in his stall at Oaklawn Park and will pass this weekend’s GII Risen Star S. at the Fair Grounds, trainer Robertino Diodoro confirmed Wednesday.
“In the end, I feel better running him out of his own stall,” Diodoro said.
The bay colt, who was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before breaking his maiden in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Nov. 28, turned in his sixth breeze of the year Monday in Hot Springs, going a half-mile in :49.60 beneath jockey David Cohen.

“David did a great job again working him,” said Diodoro, Oaklawn’s leading trainer last year. “A horse like him, as aggressive as he is, you get the wrong guy on him and all of sudden your nice, easy half-mile work could turn into :45, :46. Even with those other works, it’s the same thing. He’s a horse that you’ve definitely got to have the right guy on or you could really blow a work.”
The Southwest is also likely to attract champion Essential Quality (Tapit) and MGISW Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music).

Tom Brady got sloshed during Bucs’ Super Bowl parade, and Twitter loved it

Tampa celebrated the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl 55 victory in style Wednesday, hailing the team as it shared its victory in a boat parade through downtown.
Naturally, Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady was the center of attention as he celebrated with his teammates, his kids and, apparently, some libations. That was evident when video showed the 21-year NFL veteran wobbling off the team’s party boat:

MORE: Michael Irvin says audio shows Brady didn’t call Tyrann Mathieu racial slur
That certainly explains why Brady inadvisably tossed the Lombardi Trophy from one boat to another (no worries; Cameron Brate caught it). It’s not too often you see Brady let loose, but you can hardly blame him: With the Bucs’ 31-9 win over the Chiefs on Sunday, Brady eclipsed every single NFL franchise in number of Super Bowl wins. He also won his fifth MVP award, forever cementing his status as the GOAT.Regardless, people on Twitter enjoyed seeing this rarely displayed side of Brady. Here’s a sampling of some of the best reactions to his inebriation, including Brady himself:

ISL 2020-21 | It was a complete performance, admits Antonio Lopez Habas

ATK-Mohun Bagan head coach Antonio Lopez Habas is convinced that they showed a complete performance en-route to their 2-0 victory over Bengaluru FC, last Tuesday evening. With the win, the Mariners are now just one point behind league leaders Mumbai City FC, with 10 wins to their name. The fixture which was supposed to be one of the biggest ones this season turned out to be a one-sided affair with ATK-Mohun Bagan staring as favourites even before the starting whistle. Giving away a penalty in the 37th minute of the game did not help Bengaluru FC either, with them totally surrendering after Roy Krishna converted from the spot. The second goal was inevitable, even though the manner in which Marcelinho scored was a bonus. ATK-Mohun Bagan head coach Antonio Lopez Habas is thrilled with the win and was convinced that they played a complete performance.”We played a solid match. We have a good feeling for the rest of the matches. We are improving every day and we have an opportunity to improve. It was a, maybe, complete performance. We have to think only about the next match, not thinking about the future,” said Antonio Lopez Habas, during the post-match press conference. In spite of having experienced players in their ranks lime Sunil Chhetri for instance, the Blues have failed to deliver big-time, with the loss against ATK-Mohun Bagan summing up their season. Habas also stressed the fact that how their defenders tackled the Indian captain and kept him quiet throughout the game.”Yes [they did a good job in controlling Sunil Chhetri]. He is a legend in India. In football, you have to respect the player and Chhetri is the captain of the national team. I know him from ISL 2014 and I have the same concept about him this season and the last season. I congratulate him on his career because for me he is one of the best players in India,” stated the Spaniard.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

The Secret Coach: Seven free players who could move to Premier League this summer

With the January transfer window closing around Europe, plenty of big names with just months left on their contracts will be looking for a new club this summer. These superstars of the game include Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Angel Di Maria, but could these players and more move to the Premier League? Let’s take a deeper look with the help of our contact in the sport, The Secret Coach. The Secret Coach is a professional football coach in English football… who will remain anonymous. The Secret Coach has worked with some of the biggest names in the game, been through the coaching badge courses and is currently part of the coaching team at an English league side… and that’s all we’re telling you. As ever, this week, The Secret Coach pulls no punches!Last week, we talked about who might win this season’s UEFA Champions League, but this week, it’s some of the many stars who have graced the tournament who will be looking for a new club in just a few months. We have to start with Lionel Messi. After dominating La Liga, it looks like the mercurial Argentinian might be on his way to Manchester City in the summer. What does The Secret Coach think he’ll bring to the Premier League and will he be as effective as he is in Spain?“I can’t wait to see him in the Premier League!” says TSC. “It will answer questions on who is the best – him or Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi has been a fantastic one-club man club and achieved so much. He’s a fantastic player but Ronaldo has been in four countries and achieved it all, so to see how Messi would get on in Prem would be amazing. Ronaldo has done a cold wet evening on the South Coast and delivered – can Messi?”Lionel Messi is currently 3/1 to sign for Paris St. Germain and 7/2 to sign for Manchester City. One of the youngest players who is currently looking like he’ll be available ‘on a free’ is Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, aged just 21. It feels like every club could do with him joining them, but who could use him most and where would he suit?“He’s interesting – a good keeper for sure and young, but a few clubs have tried and failed to sign him and I wonder why.” Says TSC. “I haven’t seen any ‘Big Six’ sides try to sign him on a pre-contract basis. I feel there are better keepers.”One to avoid, maybe. Memphis Depay is one of two ex-Manchester United names on our radar, but could the Lyon player really make it in the Premier League second time around or does The Secret Coach think he’d rather play for a La Liga side such as Barcelona?“Depay didn’t hit the heights that he promised at United, but like all good players, he didn’t let it affect him and has gone away and reestablished himself for club and country, showing the form that got him his United move. The question for me is whether he wants to prove the doubters and himself to some degree wrong and show that he can make it in the best league in the world. He’ll either do that or cash in on his good form and go to Spain.”Angel Di Maria also spent a year in the EPL but has since been one of PSG’s star performers in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Is there a way the gifted Argentine could make it in the Premier League and if so, which team would suit him best?“He’s a talented player,” says TSC. “I personally feel he is not suited to the physical nature of the Premier League as he showed in his spell at United. It feels like he’s been around for so long and at big clubs, too. I’m not sure if any of the current top six would take him.”Someone else who has played for Real Madrid is Galacticos lifer Sergio Ramos, who seems to have played the Premier League off against Real Madrid in a bid to get another contract more times than he’s been red carded in his career… and that’s saying something. What if Ramos really did come to the Premier League?“A love him or hate him player! If you play with him, he’s loved as he is a good defender who can score goals and has a winning mentality. If he’s not on your team his ‘dark arts’ and desire to win can be frustrating and annoying for others as can his competitive nature.”Ramos has a combative style that might suit the Premier League, but The Secret Coach thinks that he might pay for that aspect of his game more than it counts for him.“With his red card count, could he spend more time on the sidelines? I’d love him in the Premier League, again to see how a one club player at the top of his game can cope in another league. I’d liken him more to Thiago Silva in his consistency rather than a David Luiz-type, but I think London clubs might be tempted!”PSG winger Julian Draxler has weirdly never played for a Premier League club. In a league where wingers are so highly valued, could he make a real difference at the age of 28?“He’s a good player that’s been off the radar since moving to PSG. I like his energy and potential as a goalscorer; I can see a ‘Big Six’ side taking a punt on him as a squad player, but not a starter as the Big Six are full of good midfielders and wingers. Could the middle pack like Leicester make him a star?”Finally, we have to talk about Zlatan. Legendary former Manchester United and current A.C. Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be in his late 30s, but he was brilliant at Old Trafford a few years ago. Does the Secret Coach think he star for a Premier League club if he came back… and would he want to?“The man is a legend! Even at his age who would not want him? He proved at United as he has done at Milan he can score goals regularly. I’d love to see him back but would he go to a team who aren’t in the Champions League? I would imagine it would be a last season for him, but he’s a great player who I love to watch. He suits the Premier League as he is physical and clever and can score a range of goals, but I can’t see him moving, especially if Milan beat Juventus to the Serie A title.”And that’s all this week from The Secret Coach, who will be back next week here on Calvin Ayre.Imagine Zlatan back at a Premier League club. We’d all enjoy seeing another set of highlights like this from the superstar Swede!

In the N.B.A., Money Speaks Louder Than Stars

David Stern was in his final full season as the N.B.A. commissioner in 2012-13 when LeBron James won his fourth and most recent Most Valuable Player Award. Eight years later, James is in his 18th season and a leading candidate in the race to receive the Maurice Podoloff trophy from Commissioner Adam Silver.James can still do many things in his supposed twilight years with the Los Angeles Lakers. He remains the game’s most high-profile figure and, by playing at an M.V.P. level at age 36, is constantly reminding us that basketball has its own answer to the N.F.L.’s time-defying Tom Brady. It would appear not even James, though, can stop the N.B.A. from staging an All-Star Game next month in Atlanta. He couldn’t have come out much stronger against the concept than he did late last week, blasting the N.B.A.’s plans to stuff three days’ worth of All-Star events into a one-shot Turner Sports extravaganza on March 7. League and players’ union officials are nonetheless expected to soon announce that those plans have been locked in.It is reminiscent of how the season started — and another illustration of the louder-than-ever say held by the N.B.A.’s broadcast partners at such challenging financial times for the sport’s various stakeholders.Players largely left the summer bubble expecting the 2020-21 season to be contested exclusively in 2021, starting no earlier than January and perhaps as late as March. Opening night was then suddenly moved up to Dec. 22 at the strong urging of the league’s two national broadcast partners, who wanted to preserve two valuable television properties: Disney’s five-game Christmas slate on ESPN and ABC, and Turner’s traditional Tuesday night doubleheader to start the season. As James said in a postgame session with reporters on Thursday, many players assumed there would not be an All-Star Game during the extended break scheduled from March 5 to 10. Those players were surprised when it emerged in late January that the league and the union were working on a one-night-only window for All-Star festivities that would enable TNT to air the event, the jewel of its annual N.B.A. coverage. The 2020 All-Star Game in Chicago, for example, attracted 7.3 million viewers for TNT. That was better than the viewing figures for any of the Christmas games on Disney-owned channels. The big difference between December and now is that no one has pinpointed the financial impact of a modified All-Star program. League officials maintain that it’s difficult to project figures for All-Star festivities in terms of basketball-related income, which owners and players split nearly 50/50. The New York Times was among the news outlets to report in December that starting the season before Christmas, rather than in mid-January, was expected to generate at least $500 million more in revenue. Two estimates I was provided by industry insiders pegged the value of Turner’s All-Star coverage at $30 million to $60 million — money that the N.B.A. would have to make up to Turner later if the game was not played. You can safely assume that the overall potential loss (with B.R.I. added) would be much higher, given the way players of considerable stature, such as Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers, have talked about what’s motivating the league to take the health risk of bringing together the top players during the coronavirus pandemic.“It is what it is at this point,” Leonard said. “We all know why we’re playing it — there’s money on the line.”Leonard seemed to grasp better than most that, 11 months into the N.B.A.’s new reality (and the world’s), trade-offs for the big picture are a constant.Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Nets’ James Harden are among the marquee players who have joined James in publicly questioning the All-Star plans, contributing to an uncharacteristic swirl of pushback for Silver from the league’s stars. Phoenix’s Chris Paul, the players’ association president, said in response that “guys are entitled to their feelings” — but Paul insisted that “decisions are being made” with “the full body of players in mind.”Translation: More than 400 players who won’t be invited to participate in the resuscitated All-Star gathering are counting on those who do take part to ensure TNT can proceed with its usual showcase event and insulate them from a costly financial hit.The league’s deals with Disney and TNT, worth $24 billion over nine years, do not expire until after the 2024-25 season, but it is never too soon in coronavirus times to re-establish oneself as an exemplary partner. The N.B.A., for all the criticism it has absorbed in recent days, is certainly on a winning streak there, from conceiving a bubble to safely usher the 2019-20 season to a conclusion … to engineering that bubble at Walt Disney World as opposed to Las Vegas or any other interested city … to this All-Star save.I’m told Phoenix was proposed as a potential venue for March 7. Holding it in Atlanta instead would put the game in TNT’s backyard, eliminating travel for its coverage crews.Yet it’s the opposite for the participants, and that’s the unsettling part — even after the N.B.A. announced zero positives in leaguewide coronavirus testing last week. The All-Stars face extra travel to a function steeped in fraternization between players at a time when teams, in their day-to-day existence, are strongly discouraged from postgame interactions of any kind. There’s seemingly no way to avoid describing this game — an exhibition — as risky. The All-Star Game “has been an important tradition throughout the history of the league and remains one of our top events for global fan interest and engagement,” Mike Bass, an N.B.A. spokesman, said in a statement to The Times last week. “The health and safety of everyone involved is at the forefront of our discussions with the players’ association.”The league and the union have been adamant that the game will feature a significant philanthropic component to benefit historically Black colleges and universities as well as Covid-19 relief efforts. The broadcast itself is certain to amplify a league campaign that urges fans to take the coronavirus vaccine as it becomes available and features Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Gregg Popovich in commercial spots.Murmurs persist that some All-Stars will seek to opt out of playing what has been a mandatory assignment for those selected, according to the league’s bylaws, but all signs indicate the game will go ahead.James surely knows it, too. Don’t forget that, dismayed as he was about a game that “I don’t even understand” and a trip that will take 24 All-Stars “into one city that’s open,” he also said he would be there if selected.Even for the face of the N.B.A.’s player empowerment era, even when he’s playing Brady-esque ball, there are limits. You ask; I answer. Every week in this space, I’ll field three questions posed via email at marcstein-newsletter@nytimes.com. Please include your first and last name, as well as the city you’re writing in from, and make sure “Corner Three” is in the subject line.(Responses may be lightly edited or condensed for clarity.)Q: Who you got? Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant? Or LeBron James and Anthony Davis? I know you’ve covered both duos. I bet you go with Kobe and Shaq. — Chris Williams (Laguna Beach, Calif.)Stein: We’ve seen James and Davis together for less than a season and a half. As fearsome as they look as a tag team, even after winning a championship on their first try and quickly establishing the Lakers as this season’s title favorites, I can’t put them ahead of the twosome at the center of the N.B.A.’s last three-peat.Not yet.But I reserve the right to change this vote down the road. For all their success together, O’Neal and Bryant had to settle for three titles in eight seasons. They dominated every aspect of the league for nearly a decade, with their drama as much as with the on-court havoc they caused, but the partnership was dissolved in acrimony when the Lakers decided it was untenable to keep orbiting the team around O’Neal and traded him to Miami in July 2004. There will always be a sense that these two divorced prematurely and could have won more together.James and Davis so far have a harmony that O’Neal and Bryant scarcely achieved. It’s still the honeymoon phase, with no guarantee things stay this way, but the Lakers also have their two biggest stars under contract together through 2022-23. The outlook is rather rosy — as long as they stay healthy. (Davis, as we speak, is nursing some nagging discomfort in his right leg and foot.)It’s important to remember the circumstances when making your assessments. O’Neal hadn’t won an N.B.A. championship and was still reasonably young himself, at 24, when he was paired with Bryant, then the most ambitious teenager in basketball history. James and Davis not only have games that mesh together beautifully, as offensive fulcrum and defensive anchor, but they came together when they were clearly ready to team up.James is in the later stages of his career and, with his legacy secure, has willingly ceded a chunk of the spotlight to Davis that might have been much harder to share in his 20s. Davis couldn’t carry New Orleans to glory as the face of that franchise and has clearly reveled in the boost he gets from James’s presence to unlock his full potential.Q: Why did the Nets feel compelled to give away so much in the James Harden trade? Couldn’t this transaction have gone forward without including Cleveland and Jarrett Allen? — Tom Cartelli (Milford, N.J.)Stein: No chance. The three future first-round draft picks that the Nets parted with were the headliner trade assets they used to win the Harden sweepstakes, but they were not going to have any shot at constructing a workable deal without including both Caris LeVert and Allen. Rather than keep Allen, Houston routed him to the Cavaliers for another first-round pick (Milwaukee’s 2021 first-rounder) and to reduce the Rockets’ luxury-tax bill.Harden’s incoming $41,254,920 salary required the Nets to send out a minimum of $32,923,936 to make the salary-cap math work. Allen’s $3,909,902 salary didn’t make much of a dent into that figure, but combining him with another blossoming talent in LeVert at $16,203,704, those three first-round picks and the rights for Houston to swap first-rounders in four additional drafts enabled the Nets to outbid Philadelphia and Boston.Q: Given the potential voter fatigue with the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo this season and Luka Doncic’s Mavericks off to a slow start, could we see someone in his 30s win the Most Valuable Player Award for the first time in 15 years? Steve Nash was the last to win the award in his 30s in 2006. — David Anderson (Raleigh, N.C.)Stein: You’re onto something for sure. Denver’s Nikola Jokic (26 on Feb. 19) and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid (27 in March) are at the forefront of the M.V.P. race with roughly one-third of the regular season complete, but there are more 30-somethings in the conversation than players in their 20s.The Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James (36), Golden State’s Stephen Curry (33 in March) and the Nets’ Kevin Durant (32) would be in my top five with Jokic and Embiid if voting ended today. The duel between Curry (57 points) and Doncic (42 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds) Saturday night in a 134-132 victory for Dallas was one of the games of the season so far — and reminded you that Curry is back to his best after missing almost all of last season with a broken hand.(The Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, in case you’re wondering, turns 30 in June.)17The Western Conference-leading Utah Jazz (20-5) are making 17 3-pointers per game — which puts them on pace for a league record. The 2018-19 Houston Rockets made 16.1 3s per game to set the record, according to Stathead.70.2For all the justified praised we heaped on the Lakers’ Anthony Davis last week for how perfectly he complemented LeBron James, there’s no avoiding one prime area of slippage in his game this season: Davis is shooting a career-worst 70.2 percent from the free-throw line. He shot a career-best 84.6 percent last season.2Jeremy Lin of the Santa Cruz Warriors (Golden State’s affiliate) and Nik Stauskas of the Raptors 905 (Toronto’s affiliate) were the only two N.B.A. veterans allocated to the G League team of their choosing via the N.B.A. developmental league’s new veteran selection rule — which is also known unofficially as “the Jeremy Lin rule.” The G League’s 20th season opens Wednesday with 18 teams playing in a restricted-access zone at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., similar to last summer’s N.B.A. bubble.5We’re down to just five teams that have not faced a game postponement through the season’s opening seven weeks. That group includes both New York teams (Knicks and Nets), both Los Angeles teams (Lakers and Clippers) and Toronto (which is playing its home games in Tampa, Fla.).3Atlanta appears poised host to the All-Star Game for the third time. It was the host city in 1978 (when my beloved Randy Smith of the Buffalo Braves won most valuable player honors) and in 2003.Hit me up anytime on Twitter (@TheSteinLine) or Facebook (@MarcSteinNBA) or Instagram (@thesteinline).
