IND vs ENG | India outplayed us in all three departments, it’s been an education for us, admits Joe Root

Losing English skipper Joe Root had no qualms in admitting that the tourists were outplayed by the hosts in all the departments with plenty of learnings for them. He praised Moeen Ali for improving as the game progressed and also the way wicketkeeper Ben Fokaes batted and kept wickets. After a thumping defeat in the Test series opener, pretty much channelling their Down Under spirit, India fought back incredibly well to down England by 317 runs in the second Test at the Chepauk to level the Test series 1-1. It was a game where England were completely outplayed and there was no time when they looked like in the game especially after their horrendous show with the bat in the first innings. Not only were they disappointing with the bat, but they also weren’t accurate and penetrative enough with the ball on a pitch that had a lot of assistance for spinners. Speaking post the loss, Joe Root admitted that the team was outplayed and they need to learn how to build pressure as they weren’t tight enough on day one of the Test, where India ended on 300/6.”Credit to India, they outplayed us in all three departments. It has been an education for us, you could come up with conditions like these and we have to learn from this and find a way to score runs. We need to learn to build pressure and bowl six balls at one batsman. On day one we could have been a bit tighter, squeeze the game a bit more and make it harder for them to score,” Joe Root said at the post-match presentation. He also asserted that the wicket got difficult from day two but they need to bat better in terms of building their innings. The English skipper is still keeping high spirits and looking forward to the last two Tests. “From day two it was a very difficult wicket to bat on. But we have got to be smarter about how we’re building an innings. We are 1-1 and we are excited about the next two games given the way we played in the first game. We could’ve played that extra spinner, it is always easy to look at balancing a side at the end of the game. It will be different again when we turn up for the third game which will be a day-nighter, and very exciting last two games.” England had included Moeen Ali at the expense of Dom Bess while Ben Foakes replaced Jos Buttler for the Test and both of them had a good game especially Foakes who impressed with both the bat and the gloves. Root also praised both the players. “Moeen got better with the ball as the game went on, and we know how destructive he can be with the bat. Ben Foakes batted really well in the first innings and his keeping has always been excellent. There are definitely things we can take from this week.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Twitter reacts to Rishabh ‘Spiderman’ Pant’s brilliant stumping to send back Lawrence

After humming to the tune of Desi Spiderman, Rishabh Pant was at his vigilant duty in Spiderman’s costume, with a brilliant stumping, right after his advice to Ravichandran Ashwin. Being blinded by Dan Lawrence’s brain-faded charge, the wicketkeeper unsighted completed a brilliant stumping.Since the first Test, against England, Rishabh Pant has been brilliant behind the sticks, with his impressive athleticism. In the first innings of the second Test, the wicketkeeper plucked two of the best catches in the Test, both times diving to his left. That even led to Ravichandran Ashwin praising the left-hander for his brilliance behind the stumps. While he was dismissed and undone by the brilliance of Ben Foakes, behind the sticks, it had inspired the wicketkeeper batsman. On the third day, it was the spinners, who ran riot picking up wickets, there was one opportunity where he fumbled a catch off Ashwin’s bowling. However, on day four, none of it mattered, as the wicketkeeper was called to duty early in the morning. Just before Ashwin’s spell to Dan Lawrence, the wicketkeeper charged his way to the bowler, seemingly talking about a plan to dismiss the English batsman. In the span of two deliveries, the off-spinner bowled an excellent delivery that drifted and stayed straight, going in between the English batsman’s legs, to leave Pant in a spot of dire. Despite being blinded, the wicketkeeper’s exquisite footwork ensured that the right-handed batsman walked back to the dressing room. Not the best wicketkeeper in the country? A difference of opinion now? Here is how Twitter reacted:

Its happening. Its starting to come together for Rishabh Pant after a torrid year and a half. Batting. Keeping. Everything. Can’t wait to see him take off in the limited overs now. This will be the year of @RishabhPant17.#INDvENG #RishabhPant

IND vs ENG | Shubman Gill to undergo precautionary scan, won’t take field today

India’s promising opener Shubman Gill, like Cheteshwar Pujara, has an injury scare, after he got hit on his arm while fielding and will be undergoing a precautionary scan. As a result of this, the right-hander will not be able to take field today as India try to level the Test series at the Chepauk.Indian cricket and injuries have become synonymous with each other since the tour Down Under. India had seen numerous injuries in Australia and had to play a depleted side with many players missing. And in the ongoing Test, there have been two injury scares. After Cheteshwar Pujara couldn’t take the field on day three of the ongoing Chennai Test after getting hit whilst batting, Shubman Gill won’t be fielding today. The young Indian opener had sustained a blow to his left forearm when he was fielding on day three of the Test. As a result of this, he will also be undergoing precautionary scan and is being currently assessed, stated BCCI, reported ANI. Only later, the extent of the injury will be known if there is anything major. In case, the Punjab opener fails to regain full fitness in time for the next Test, then Mayank Agarwal, who was dropped and replaced by Gill in Australia as an opener, may well return to the team’s XI.

IND vs ENG | Love to credit Vikram Rathour for improved batting displays, praises Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian offie Ravichandran Ashwin has credited India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour for his improved batting in the last four-five Test matches. He also admitted that it was great to see how Mohammed Siraj reacted when Ashwin got to his hundred and also thanked the crowd for their support.Ravichandran Ashwin has been on a spree of changing perceptions around him since the Australia Tests. He had a fantastic series Down Under as he bowled brilliantly and took important wickets throughout. Then he showed redemption with the bat at the SCG when he helped draw the Test with Hanuma Vihari and now with the Chennai Test, he has proved that not only he can bide time but also score big, which has been missing with his batting in the last few years. On day three of the ongoing Test, he made a memorable century as it came on a wicket turning square when most of the main batsmen also struggled to get going barring Virat Kohli. Ashwin credited the batting coach for his improved batting displays in the last few Tests. He had batted with Siraj to get to his hundred, farming the strike well and helping Siraj from the other end. He admitted that he had an idea of how to bat with the No.11 given his past experience with Ishant Sharma.”I can’t say it’s been happening in the last three days, I have been practising with Vikram Rathour. I would love to credit him with how my batting has come through over the last four-five matches. I don’t know when the next Test is going to be here, but I am pleased. Don’t know if I will play another Test in Chennai, and if at all, when,” Ashwin said, reported TOI. “In the past when he’s (Ishant) been with me when I got hundreds at home and once Siraj came, I knew how to approach.”It was a heartwarming moment for the fans to see how much Siraj celebrated when Ashwin got to his hundred. And the spinner well aware of it admitted that it was thrilling to see Siraj celebrate the way he did.”I was thrilled by his batting and told him to go through the line of the ball. It was amazing to see how excited he was when I got my hundred. I don’t know what the team is feeling like but I am sure they are thrilled. I can’t thank the crowd enough, they have been very supportive,” Ashwin said. One of the hallmarks of Ashwin’s century was how well he swept the spinners be it conventional sweeps or reverse ones. India’s no.8 stated that it was a well-planned assault. “I will sleep well through the night, that is all that I am thinking. Even after the last Test, we spoke about how we are going to counter Leach and probably bring sweep to the game Last time I was sweeping, I was 19 years old, I hit a bit of sweep shots well today. I am thankful the plan has paid off. Sort of had a very good day.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Pitch is turning but only when you hit the right areas, insists Axar Patel

Axar Patel, who’s making his Test debut at the Chepauk, reckons that it’s a turning pitch but you have to nail the right areas to get the most out of it. He also added that the team’s confidence was greatly boosted by the partnership between Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The venue of the first and second Test might be the same but not the nature of the deck as the pitch has been turning in the ongoing Test as opposed to the series opener, played on a relatively flat wicket. Despite the assistance from the wicket, there has been a lot of difference between the way both the team’s spinners have bowled. While Indian spinners have able to gain maximum out of a helpful track, the same hasn’t been the case with England duo of Moeen Ali and Jack Leach. Especially, Moeen has bowled quite a few full tosses pretty much like Dom Bess and at times both have lacked the penetration as shown by the Indian spinners. Axar Patel, who took two wickets today for India, also suggested the same and stated that one has to bowl in the right areas to reap rewards. “Like the way the wicket is behaving, it’s turning. But it only turns when you bowl the right length, the right pace. If you are a little slow, it doesn’t turn a lot. So if you hit the right pace and line, it becomes tough for them to bat. It becomes important for the bowlers to bowl the right pace,” Axar told reporters in a virtual presser at the end of day three. There have been a lot of talks around the nature of the wicket but the left-arm spinner asserted that players need to adapt just like Indians do on seaming wickets. “Actually if you look at my last dismissal (Root) one, it was down to the umpire, so I can’t say a lot on that. But here on this wicket, I think we played really well, so when we are able to score runs, they shouldn’t have issues. I think they (England) should change the mindset about the wicket because we also play on seaming wickets.”Notably, if not for injury, the Gujarat spinner would have played the first Test too, and he reckons it was frustrating for him to miss out earlier. Once the No.1 ODI bowler in the world, he also said that the wicket has suited his strength as he tries to bowl accurately. “I was about to play in the first Test, it was frustrating for me but I never got irritated by it. I just took some time and worked on my fitness, my physio told me that it was a niggle and it would become alright for the second Test. It was frustrating but if you look at it positively, I could give my 100% here. I have played with Ash a lot, his mindset and his bowling to both left and right-handed batsman. He talks a lot about mindset and how I could trouble the batsman with my bowling.”“The way I bowl, accuracy is my strength, it has worked well for me. It’s just that you have to be accurate, focused and keep bowling the same line and length. The wicket will take care of itself, you just have to keep bowling to your strength,” Axar said.Indian batting got off to shaky start and were at one position, 106 for 6 today but then Kohli and Ashwin combined in a big partnership with the former getting a fifty and the latter making an emphatic century that helped India to 286 runs. Axar remarked that the team’s confidence was boosted by the Kohli-Ash partnership and also how the team doesn’t pay much attention to the outside noise. “I think our team’s confidence was boosted by Ashwin’s knock. We had a lot of soft dismissals, the way Pujara got out. We were a bit nervous but the way Ashwin and Virat played, we had immense confidence and when there are runs on board, you tend to be more confident of your chances.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Ajinkya Rahane

Overreaction Monday ft. Michael Vaughan’s comment, Bangladesh cricket’s reality and ISL referees

India on the brink of a possible Test victory at the Chepauk, with Indian batsmen set to take an insurmountable lead – Monday morning’s script couldn’t have been better. But, to make it more interesting, we have compiled a few issues which have been a talk of the town in the past week.Michael Vaughan faces the heatOn Sunday, former England skipper Michael Vaughan stated that the Chennai pitch isn’t fit for Test cricket and called it a beach in the grab of a cricket ground.SC Take: You cannot ignore Michael Vaughan, can you? Waking up to a horrific batting performance by England did not cheer up the former skipper, although he did decide to justify the debacle over breakfast. What better way to divert the failure than to put the blame directly on the pitch, which according to Vaughan was a ‘shocker’ and an ‘unprepared one’ and a ‘beach’. Albeit not even a soul was nearby to point out to him that India had actually scored 329 runs on the same pitch a day earlier, with the Englishman even taking to Twitter to laud the efforts of Rohit Sharma’s brilliant century. Indian fans took the privilege of taking a dig at the former cricketer on a cozy Sunday.Even if that comment backfired, he could have abstained further embarrassment by not playing the ‘produce whatever you want at home to gain an advantage’ card. It drew immediate attention from one of the greatest spinners – Shane Warne, who refuted the statement. Maybe, Vaughan could have peeped at the scorecard of the second Test during India’s tour of England, in 2018. James Anderson and Stuart Broad made merry on the ‘green top’. Was Michael Vaughan’s Twitter handle deactivated back then?Monty Panesar needs to do homework before making commentsIf the Indian lose the second Test, it would be the end of Virat Kohli’s captaincy, claims Monty Panesar.SC Take: To put things into perspective, there hasn’t been a complete batsman other than Kohli in the modern era, while his extraordinary stats have set our expectations sky-high. He also boasts of maintaining a stupendous record as a captain, especially in Tests, currently the most successful for India, with 33 wins in 58 Test matches. Former cricketer Monty Panesar felt that Virat Kohli should be axed from his leadership duties if India lost the second Test in the ongoing series against England after the Indian lost just the 2nd Test of his career as a captain at home. Ridiculous, isn’t it?Agreed, that Ajinkya Rahane is back from a historic Test series win as skipper from Australia, but we cannot deny the facts. Australia were the last team to achieve the feat when Steve O’Keefe bagged 12 wickets to tumble the hosts on a tricky Pune pitch. India’s dominance at home can only be compared to Steve Waugh’s unit, which was hardly unhurt at home during the early 2000s. Detractors will justify themselves from all corners, but we need to learn to defend the man who has overseen the cricket team to grow as an unstoppable force. It’s time Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) accepts the realityNazmul Hassan slammed Bangladesh captain and coach over team selection after the team lost its second consecutive Test to Bangladesh to concede the series.SC Take: Bangladesh’s policy of churning out positive results by preparing spin-friendly wickets at home, is well documented in the past, but what they haven’t realised is the fact that away teams have now prepared a blueprint to break the code. The recent loss to a second-string West Indies side is evident how their successful strategy has backfired. But, why is the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan complaining over poor team selection, having lashed out at their captain and coach? This was coming and Bangladesh cannot pretend that they weren’t aware of it. Bangladesh have failed to mature as a Test-playing nation. Period. While they have improved leaps and bounds in limited-overs cricket, the longer format doesn’t seem to attract them too much. The domestic structure breathes on limited-overs leagues like the Dhaka Premier League and the Bangladesh Premier League, while a similar effort is missing in the National Cricket League – the breeding ground for the longer format. There’s no escape from reality until the above-mentioned gap is bridged. Referees are humans, they have flesh and bloodSC East Bengal officials continue to crib regarding the quality of refereeing.SC Take: We can’t deny that poor refereeing has been the hallmark of the ongoing Indian Super League, with the officials often finding themselves under the scanner. But, the repercussions have been abnormal, to say the least, with the coaches stooping low to an unbearable level to voice their protests. SC East Bengal was denied a genuine penalty during their game against Hyderabad FC, earlier this week, which evidently flooded the social media with hate messages from the fanatics. As keen followers of the beautiful game, we should take into account that we are not privileged enough to have Video Assistant Referee (VAR) nor that humans tend to make mistakes. What’s more unfortunate is the way high-profile coaches have reacted to the same, with Robbie Fowler handed a five-match ban for racist comments, while Stuart Baxter got himself sacked by Odisha FC over sexual violent remarks made a few days back. No wonder we are going to face such issues until VAR is introduced in the ISL. Even Arsenal’s David Luiz was sent off in a bizarre way, but their rage was limited to a decent level. Yes, Indian football needs to grow a lot.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Pant’s batting confidence rubbing into his keeping as well, feels Deep Dasgupta

Former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta feels that wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant’s batting confidence has started to rub on his keeping as well. He also praised his movement in the second innings of the first Test behind the stumps and also the two catches he took yesterday. Rishabh Pant’s wicketkeeping has been pretty decent in the last three Tests. He was sloppy when he returned back to the Test side at MCG and the SCG where he had dropped simple catches. But ever since he got 97 on the final day of the SCG Test, his keeping has also improved as witnessed at the Gabba. Barring few misses here and there in the first innings of the first Test, he was really good in the game and has been absolutely brilliant in the ongoing second Test on a square turner. Former Indian gloveman Deep Dasgupta feels on the same lines as he reckoned that his batting confidence has rubbed on his wicketkeeping as well. “I think the way he is batting, that confidence is rubbing onto his keeping as well. Because it is, and we have all heard this before, and we have said it as well, that it is a confidence game. So, once you start feeling confident about yourself, about your skills obviously you look like a different player, ” Deep Dasgupta told Sports Today, reported HT. He also applauded the way Pant kept wickets in the second innings of the first Test, where he felt he was balanced and relaxed. “If you look at someone like Rishabh, even in the last Test match as well, he kept really well in the second innings, the way he was moving around he looked relaxed and did not look worried, so he is not making those unnecessary movements, and because of that he has more balance in his approach and his stance”.On day two of the ongoing second Test, the 23-year-old took two brilliant catches, both time diving to his left and grabbing the ball exceptionally well. DDG termed both the catches phenomenal “Those two catches were absolutely phenomenal, and not just that, those catches were, of course, brilliant, but generally also the way he kept for those deliveries that were down the legside from Kuldeep, he was really good at that. So, all in all, he is looking really good,” he added.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .
