IND vs ENG | India outplayed us in all three departments, it’s been an education for us, admits Joe Root

Losing English skipper Joe Root had no qualms in admitting that the tourists were outplayed by the hosts in all the departments with plenty of learnings for them. He praised Moeen Ali for improving as the game progressed and also the way wicketkeeper Ben Fokaes batted and kept wickets. After a thumping defeat in the Test series opener, pretty much channelling their Down Under spirit, India fought back incredibly well to down England by 317 runs in the second Test at the Chepauk to level the Test series 1-1. It was a game where England were completely outplayed and there was no time when they looked like in the game especially after their horrendous show with the bat in the first innings. Not only were they disappointing with the bat, but they also weren’t accurate and penetrative enough with the ball on a pitch that had a lot of assistance for spinners. Speaking post the loss, Joe Root admitted that the team was outplayed and they need to learn how to build pressure as they weren’t tight enough on day one of the Test, where India ended on 300/6.”Credit to India, they outplayed us in all three departments. It has been an education for us, you could come up with conditions like these and we have to learn from this and find a way to score runs. We need to learn to build pressure and bowl six balls at one batsman. On day one we could have been a bit tighter, squeeze the game a bit more and make it harder for them to score,” Joe Root said at the post-match presentation. He also asserted that the wicket got difficult from day two but they need to bat better in terms of building their innings. The English skipper is still keeping high spirits and looking forward to the last two Tests. “From day two it was a very difficult wicket to bat on. But we have got to be smarter about how we’re building an innings. We are 1-1 and we are excited about the next two games given the way we played in the first game. We could’ve played that extra spinner, it is always easy to look at balancing a side at the end of the game. It will be different again when we turn up for the third game which will be a day-nighter, and very exciting last two games.” England had included Moeen Ali at the expense of Dom Bess while Ben Foakes replaced Jos Buttler for the Test and both of them had a good game especially Foakes who impressed with both the bat and the gloves. Root also praised both the players. “Moeen got better with the ball as the game went on, and we know how destructive he can be with the bat. Ben Foakes batted really well in the first innings and his keeping has always been excellent. There are definitely things we can take from this week.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Twitter reacts to Rishabh ‘Spiderman’ Pant’s brilliant stumping to send back Lawrence

After humming to the tune of Desi Spiderman, Rishabh Pant was at his vigilant duty in Spiderman’s costume, with a brilliant stumping, right after his advice to Ravichandran Ashwin. Being blinded by Dan Lawrence’s brain-faded charge, the wicketkeeper unsighted completed a brilliant stumping.Since the first Test, against England, Rishabh Pant has been brilliant behind the sticks, with his impressive athleticism. In the first innings of the second Test, the wicketkeeper plucked two of the best catches in the Test, both times diving to his left. That even led to Ravichandran Ashwin praising the left-hander for his brilliance behind the stumps. While he was dismissed and undone by the brilliance of Ben Foakes, behind the sticks, it had inspired the wicketkeeper batsman. On the third day, it was the spinners, who ran riot picking up wickets, there was one opportunity where he fumbled a catch off Ashwin’s bowling. However, on day four, none of it mattered, as the wicketkeeper was called to duty early in the morning. Just before Ashwin’s spell to Dan Lawrence, the wicketkeeper charged his way to the bowler, seemingly talking about a plan to dismiss the English batsman. In the span of two deliveries, the off-spinner bowled an excellent delivery that drifted and stayed straight, going in between the English batsman’s legs, to leave Pant in a spot of dire. Despite being blinded, the wicketkeeper’s exquisite footwork ensured that the right-handed batsman walked back to the dressing room. Not the best wicketkeeper in the country? A difference of opinion now? Here is how Twitter reacted:

IND vs ENG | Love to credit Vikram Rathour for improved batting displays, praises Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian offie Ravichandran Ashwin has credited India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour for his improved batting in the last four-five Test matches. He also admitted that it was great to see how Mohammed Siraj reacted when Ashwin got to his hundred and also thanked the crowd for their support.Ravichandran Ashwin has been on a spree of changing perceptions around him since the Australia Tests. He had a fantastic series Down Under as he bowled brilliantly and took important wickets throughout. Then he showed redemption with the bat at the SCG when he helped draw the Test with Hanuma Vihari and now with the Chennai Test, he has proved that not only he can bide time but also score big, which has been missing with his batting in the last few years. On day three of the ongoing Test, he made a memorable century as it came on a wicket turning square when most of the main batsmen also struggled to get going barring Virat Kohli. Ashwin credited the batting coach for his improved batting displays in the last few Tests. He had batted with Siraj to get to his hundred, farming the strike well and helping Siraj from the other end. He admitted that he had an idea of how to bat with the No.11 given his past experience with Ishant Sharma.”I can’t say it’s been happening in the last three days, I have been practising with Vikram Rathour. I would love to credit him with how my batting has come through over the last four-five matches. I don’t know when the next Test is going to be here, but I am pleased. Don’t know if I will play another Test in Chennai, and if at all, when,” Ashwin said, reported TOI. “In the past when he’s (Ishant) been with me when I got hundreds at home and once Siraj came, I knew how to approach.”It was a heartwarming moment for the fans to see how much Siraj celebrated when Ashwin got to his hundred. And the spinner well aware of it admitted that it was thrilling to see Siraj celebrate the way he did.”I was thrilled by his batting and told him to go through the line of the ball. It was amazing to see how excited he was when I got my hundred. I don’t know what the team is feeling like but I am sure they are thrilled. I can’t thank the crowd enough, they have been very supportive,” Ashwin said. One of the hallmarks of Ashwin’s century was how well he swept the spinners be it conventional sweeps or reverse ones. India’s no.8 stated that it was a well-planned assault. “I will sleep well through the night, that is all that I am thinking. Even after the last Test, we spoke about how we are going to counter Leach and probably bring sweep to the game Last time I was sweeping, I was 19 years old, I hit a bit of sweep shots well today. I am thankful the plan has paid off. Sort of had a very good day.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Pitch is turning but only when you hit the right areas, insists Axar Patel

Axar Patel, who’s making his Test debut at the Chepauk, reckons that it’s a turning pitch but you have to nail the right areas to get the most out of it. He also added that the team’s confidence was greatly boosted by the partnership between Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The venue of the first and second Test might be the same but not the nature of the deck as the pitch has been turning in the ongoing Test as opposed to the series opener, played on a relatively flat wicket. Despite the assistance from the wicket, there has been a lot of difference between the way both the team’s spinners have bowled. While Indian spinners have able to gain maximum out of a helpful track, the same hasn’t been the case with England duo of Moeen Ali and Jack Leach. Especially, Moeen has bowled quite a few full tosses pretty much like Dom Bess and at times both have lacked the penetration as shown by the Indian spinners. Axar Patel, who took two wickets today for India, also suggested the same and stated that one has to bowl in the right areas to reap rewards. “Like the way the wicket is behaving, it’s turning. But it only turns when you bowl the right length, the right pace. If you are a little slow, it doesn’t turn a lot. So if you hit the right pace and line, it becomes tough for them to bat. It becomes important for the bowlers to bowl the right pace,” Axar told reporters in a virtual presser at the end of day three. There have been a lot of talks around the nature of the wicket but the left-arm spinner asserted that players need to adapt just like Indians do on seaming wickets. “Actually if you look at my last dismissal (Root) one, it was down to the umpire, so I can’t say a lot on that. But here on this wicket, I think we played really well, so when we are able to score runs, they shouldn’t have issues. I think they (England) should change the mindset about the wicket because we also play on seaming wickets.”Notably, if not for injury, the Gujarat spinner would have played the first Test too, and he reckons it was frustrating for him to miss out earlier. Once the No.1 ODI bowler in the world, he also said that the wicket has suited his strength as he tries to bowl accurately. “I was about to play in the first Test, it was frustrating for me but I never got irritated by it. I just took some time and worked on my fitness, my physio told me that it was a niggle and it would become alright for the second Test. It was frustrating but if you look at it positively, I could give my 100% here. I have played with Ash a lot, his mindset and his bowling to both left and right-handed batsman. He talks a lot about mindset and how I could trouble the batsman with my bowling.”“The way I bowl, accuracy is my strength, it has worked well for me. It’s just that you have to be accurate, focused and keep bowling the same line and length. The wicket will take care of itself, you just have to keep bowling to your strength,” Axar said.Indian batting got off to shaky start and were at one position, 106 for 6 today but then Kohli and Ashwin combined in a big partnership with the former getting a fifty and the latter making an emphatic century that helped India to 286 runs. Axar remarked that the team’s confidence was boosted by the Kohli-Ash partnership and also how the team doesn’t pay much attention to the outside noise. “I think our team’s confidence was boosted by Ashwin’s knock. We had a lot of soft dismissals, the way Pujara got out. We were a bit nervous but the way Ashwin and Virat played, we had immense confidence and when there are runs on board, you tend to be more confident of your chances.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Chepauk Day 2 Talking Points: Ashwin’s Chepauk connection and Pant’s maturity

Well push the day three pitch to day two and that’s what you got on offer, Chepauk’s surface was turning square, triangles and even trapezium. On the day, there was Pant with his maturity, Ashwin with his posterity and Ben Foakes, who had triumphed others with his intensity in comparison to others.Rishabh Pant continues to mature and improviseCarefree, reckless and irresponsible – three words that started to define Rishabh Pant during his early days in Indian cricket. But since he made his Test debut, those words have been history and he has written several new pages in that book. The way he has matured since then has turned all eyes of criticism into appreciation, with rumours of adjectives running out of dictionaries. When he walked in during the wee hours on the first day, he played percentage shots, only attacking the ones which came his way. And the others, he defended, something he hadn’t quite been able to adapt in the other formats. Since his debut, Pant has an average of 45.92, just behind the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. While the left-hander isn’t quite a century-scorer, his valuable contribution has quite made him the fan favourite, which was visible at the Chepauk. When he walked out to bat, he received the biggest applause and when he walked back, the magnitude of the applause became thunderous. What was more clever was his choice of shot, playing the percentage shots while still looking for doubles, to not leave his partner at the other end exposed. Even when wickets fell around him, he patted the backs of the bowlers, giving them a bit of confidence. Unfazed about the situation, Pant continued to explode and mature. Now, time for him to do the same with the gloves.Chepauk crowd continues to marvel at Ravichandran AshwinSometimes people wonder if they could get to witness wizardry in its pure form, searching all the places for attaining wisdom. While English fans found it via James Anderson and his blissful swing, South Africa attained that wisdom with Dale Steyn. Miles away from the two Western countries, there is India and the Chepauk which continues to marvel every time they look at Ravichandran Ashwin, at his pure best. His brain is well one of the best in the game, with his memory serving him right, including that time when he took a review, for a delivery that spun similar to the way he did in 2016/17, in Mohali where he accounted for Stokes. Ashwin knows the ground, at the back of his hand, he knows every dust that would turn sharply, every dust that would bounce and the other that would keep low. When you have so much information well versed, you just have to go out and implement. That’s what Ashwin does every time he steps on to the ground, sticks by his basics and puts on his wizardry mask. His wand-like spells create chaos, even when you are batting with a monk at the crease. Even if you had ice-packs all over your body, you would feel the heat. That’s Ashwin, that’s Chepauk and that’s indeed the magical connection between the two. It isn’t just love at first sight, it is a marriage of the highest order – one bound by skills, memory and love. And it was only fitting that he walked away with the match-ball, picking up five wickets. Ben Foakes brilliant, both behind the gloves and with the batWhen the English top-order struggled, the pressure was always going to be on the middle-order to resurrect the batting innings. However, the pitch wasn’t a tad bit English or hell, not even what it was in the first Test – it was turning all corners. When the ball turns haywire, shot selection becomes crucial. That’s when Ben Foakes was put under the pump, after having weathered all storms – of turn and bounce behind the stumps. And Foakes came in, he had to listen to all kinds of chirps, from Rishabh Pant to Virat Kohli, everyone was interested in his whereabouts. Not just that, they were even handing him warnings, dishing out flighted deliveries, asking him to go against his own patience levels. None succeeded, the English keeper looked certain, far more than the others in the line-up, with his display against Indian spinners, who were at their peak. Ashwin was flighting and turning, the ball seemed to turn every corner and at the other, there was Axar Patel who was ripping it flat. But none dazed or troubled Foakes, who looked to get to the pitch marks and knock the delivery. His drive against Ashwin, which went straight, was arguably one of the best shots of the English innings. Not just comfortable, Foakes looked seasoned and with a tone of having played in these conditions, day in and day out.Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Pant has been working incredibly hard on his keeping, insists Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, who had an incredible day-out in Chennai, insisted that Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is working really hard on his glove work. There was criticism for India for using Kuldeep Yadav late but Ashwin stated that it is ought to happen given he’s the third spinner.Indian gloveman Rishabh Pant continued to impress with his batting as he made fifty in the fourth consecutive Test. He remained unbeaten at the end of India’s first innings on 58* and helped the hosts reach 329 hitting some clean sixes of the English spinners. But remarkably enough, it was his wicketkeeing today that stole the thunder as he took an exceptional diving catch to his left off Mohammed Siraj’s bowling that left everyone in awe of his abilities. In the first Test, he had kept well but did make errors, not quite so today, even though it was a turner and the kind of pitch where his keeping remains under scrutiny the most. Pant had missed a simple stumping chance on the bowling of R Ashwin in the first Test after which the offie was seen telling him how to use his hands better whilst keeping. But after his good day out in the park, when Ashwin was asked about Pant’s keeping, he revealed that the 23-year-old is working really hard on his glovework and also outlined that it’s wrong to constantly compare him with others. “In terms of Rishabh Pant’s keeping, the name of the game is confidence. He has been batting well, he has been working incredibly hard on his keeping. Sometimes, when you are constantly compared with someone, it can be really hard. I really do feel for Rishabh, especially when he is playing the white-ball format, he was constantly compared with the great MS Dhoni. Now too, he is being compared with Saha and so on, sometimes it is better to give him a break. He definitely has the ability and will go on from strength to strength, which I have no doubts on,” Ashwin said in the virtual presser. Axar Patel, who is making his Test debut in the ongoing game was really good as well as he took the crucial wicket of Joe Root when the English skipper mistimed his favorite sweep shot to hand over Patel a memorable maiden scalp. The left-arm spinner also got rid of Moeen Ali later and finished with figures of 2/40. Ashwin also reckoned that taking Root’s wicket, who had made a double-hundred last test, was crucial for the team.“Axar Patel is one of those players who has playing first-class cricket for a while now. He has had his share of good performances. Like I mentioned before about Washi, we see them in the limited-overs format and build our own perception. So with respect to that, getting Joe Root in his first Test must be a really good thing for him, very important wicket in terms of the game. And Moeen Ali too, it was crucial for us to get that wicket.”On a wicket which was turning square, Kuldeep Yadav was introduced late in the attack and bowled merely six overs while both Axar and Ashwin bowled 20 and 23.5 overs respectively. Reacting on the criticism that India received on bowling him late, the offie, who take a fifer today, asserted that he’s the third spinner and in a five-man attack, it takes time to get to bowl. “Look sometimes, we just play the game and we don’t see how you guys are seeing the game. Anyone who has played the game will understand that there are five bowlers and he’s the third spinner. It will take time before he gets his turn. This is how the game goes, this is pretty much how it happens. I think it is more about the perception of what people want to see. I thought he bowled really well and I think you will see an increasing role for him.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Breaking Bhajju Pa’s wicket record at home is incredibly special, asserts Ravichandran Ashwin

After breaking Harbhajan Singh’s record of 265 home wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin has stated that people used to make fun of him that he used to bowl like him, and now breaking his record is incredibly special. Ashwin further asserted that picking a fifer in front of the Chennai crowd is special.India had a terrific day in the office, bunding England out for a lowly total of 134 runs to take a 195-run lead in the first innings. Ravichandran Ashwin was the wrecker in chief, picking another fifer to continue his love affair with Chepauk, where he has had a fifer in every Test he has played there barring one against England in 2016. In the process, he also got closer to 400 Test wickets and broke Harbhajan’s record of 265 home Test wickets as well. On being asked about the same, Ashwin stated that he never thought of becoming an off-spinner in the first place and now reaching this position is incredibly special.“When I started watching Harbhajan Singh in the 2000s I was still wanting to be a batsman, never expected to be an off-spinner. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to play for the Indian team. A lot of my teammates used to make fun of me, I used to bowl like Bhajju pa. From thereon, to come and break his record, it is incredibly special and extremely sorry, Bhajju pa,” Ashwin said in the post-match press conference.Ashwin was further delighted by the fact that crowds made their presence felt in the game and it allowed Ashwin to soak in the energy from the ground he grew up playing in.“It’s wonderful to have crowd back in the first place. The Indian cricketing fans are also waiting to come and watch live sports. On the other hand, it is always special for me to play in front of my home ground and picking up a fifer. I would always cherish and in front of the Chennai crowd, even more special.”With so much talk about the nature of the pitch and the right kind of approach to negate the impact of the spinners, Ashwin stated that it depends on individual to individual. Giving an example of Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Joe Root, Ashwin stated that one needs to find scoring areas for themselves.“Look whatever works for you, Rohit has been sweeping really well, he has used his feet as well. Puji has used his feet really well. On the other hand, someone like Root likes sweeping. In the end, you just go with whatever works for you. Even for the quicks, you have to take the percentage shots. I think it’s about identifying the right kind of intent. Sometimes when you play on this kind of pitches, you are set for the game. You have to find scoring areas for yourself.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

IND vs ENG | Haven’t seen the English team complain about the pitch or conditions, reckons Ravichandran Ashwin

Following the second day’s play, Ravichandran Ashwin has reckoned that he hasn’t seen the English team complain about the pitch or the conditions on offer. He also added that it required incredible patience and skills to be playing on turning wickets, just like it does take on seaming wickets. On a day where wickets fell in plenty, the pitch and the conditions were under immense scrutiny by the English fans and the media. The ball started turning square, starting from the first over of the day, till the last over, where it was gripping and bouncing off the cracks. While the English team were bowled out for 134, the Indians lead by 249 runs with nine wickets in hand, going into day three. Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked up his 29th 5-fer in Test cricket, stated that he hasn’t seen the English team complain about the pitch or the conditions. However, he also insisted that facing someone bowling 140 clicks is more challenging than facing someone bowling at 85-90 clicks. “I have no idea if they (English team) have complaints about the pitches. It is usual and normal, in the seven days, they (England) have performed really well and played really well. I haven’t seen them complaining or anything. Time and again, there are conditions where the wickets will challenge, be it spin or seam. It is more challenging to actually face 140 kph than someone bowling 85 or 90 kph when the ball is spinning. The challenges are way greater than when you come up against spin,” said Ashwin in the online presser. He also reckoned that just like seaming wicket, batsmen need to show a great level of patience and skillset to get past the challenge. The off-spinner also insisted that the benchmark to face seam and spin should be set on the same level. “I think it is about being very patient, like you are playing on a seaming wicket, where you have to keep going at it and put runs on board. When it comes to spin, people expect conditions to be in their favour. But when it comes to a seaming wicket, you can’t play all your shots. The same kind of benchmarks needs to be set if you are playing on spinning conditions as well.”On his record of getting left-handers out, he revealed that it is a massive advantage for him to get the ball to turn away from the stumps. Alongside that, he also opened up that he’s learnt better, to vary the seam position and make maximum use of the pitch on offer. “I can’t really remember how it all started (Getting left-handers out). Obviously, the ball turning away from the left-hander was a big advantage for me. Over the years, the left-hand batsmen have received bowling from around the stumps. So, one thing that I have learnt better and started using more, varying the seam position. I have tried to use the crease, going wide off and trying to get the ball to spin. Over the stumps is something that I have used well in the last six months.”The Tamil Nadu off-spinner also admitted that the wearing of the SG ball in the first Test could have been because of the conditions on offer, with the hard surface. However, in this Test, he reckoned that there was a massive difference in terms of the ball’s condition, after day’s play. “Whenever you talk about it, my talks would go back to the domestic cricket days, where it was nice. That’s the expectation that you have of the SG ball, you had a benchmark and it would always be compared to that. To be honest, from the last game to this game, there was a massive difference. The pitch wasn’t as hard as the last game, so that might have helped.”Follow us on Facebook hereStay connected with us on Twitter hereLike and share our Instagram page here .

Twitter reacts to ‘Magician’ Ashwin castling Ben Stokes to thunderous applause

There is so much only a batsman can do on these wickets – where Ravichandran Ashwin turns his god-mode on and completely ends the batsmen in their own tracks. Today was just another day in that realm, as Ben Stokes was undone by a brilliant delivery, which saw drift and turn for Ashwin.
After losing the toss in the first Test, India were rewarded with a toss win on a track that was assured to turn square from the second day of play. It lived up to its bill on the first day, when the ball was turning square for Moeen Ali and Jack Leach. So when India had 329 runs on board, they were confident that the total was always going to suffice, especially in conditions that were tailor-made for their bowlers. When Ravichandran Ashwin stepped up with the ball in his hand, the ball started turning square, drifting wild and tendering no apologies to the troubled batsmen. Dominic Sibley was the first of the lot to get dismissed before Dan Lawrence joined the opener in the hut. And then, Ben Stokes walked in, their clash was all over the place yet again. No words exchanged between the two but the tension was in the air.Drifting into the middle stump, Ashwin got one to turn, which he was confident that it hit Stokes right in front. However, India lost the review for that. But after lunch, when he drifted it, even more, the ball turned quite a way, past the turning blade before crashing into the stump. Stokes was stunned, Ashwin was delighted but Chepauk was left ecstatic, as they hailed Ashwin’s heroics yet again as their folk-tale.Here is how Twitter reacted to the dismissal:
